Primary School Spartan Way Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

PBIS is a framework to improve student behavior thereby giving all students more opportunity to be successful in school. This creates more time for teaching and improves student learning. It’s not a curriculum or a program. PBIS uses a common language for staff and uses common procedures and common expectations for students. It is preventative and proactive. PBIS uses procedures and data to systematically address behavior. It teaches students our behavioral expectations and teaches and reinforces positive behaviors rather than assuming that all students know appropriate behavior. It creates a baseline foundation of what’s expected. PBIS reinforces good rather than punishes the bad, which research shows is more likely to change behavior. It celebrates good behavior and reinforces generalization of good behaviors. PBIS uses peer influence to reinforce positive behaviors. It creates a sense of community in which students take ownership of their own behavior.
